Gala Tent Marquees at the Showmans Show Gala Tent Marquees at the Showmans Show Gala Tent Marquees at the Showmans Show

Exhibiting for the first time this year is marquee manufacturer, Gala Tent. If you are planning an outdoor event in 2008 and need a marquee plus lighting, heating, flooring, dance floor, and tables, then take your brief to Gala Tent.

Gala Tent’s modular marquees are extremely versatile and adaptable and built to last using a heavy duty PVC material that simply slots into channels in a high grade aluminium framework meaning there is no need for bungee straps or ties. Also, with galvanised steel ground bars as standard, rather than an optional extra, there will be no crinkly, sagging panels blowing in the wind with a Gala Tent modular marquee.

This year Gala Tent is delighted to introduce its new high quality satin lining, which creates an atmosphere that is perfect for weddings, parties, company meetings or corporate events. Here are just some of the ways you could use a Gala Tent marquee: parties, events, shows, garaging, walkways, storage, swimming pool cover, stabling, arenas, weddings, car showrooms, hospitality, show-jumping and other sporting events. The list is endless.

A family run business, Gala Tent, specialise in the supply and manufacture of modular marquees and pagodas. With no hidden costs Gala Tent provide a professional service with quality products and guarantee they cannot be beaten on price throughout Europe!

Sky the limit as firm takes off into orbit
Magnificent Trio see business grow

A trio of Barnsley Internet pioneers have seen their three-year-old business go into orbit.
Gala Tent has experienced growth of nearly 900 percent turnover and are aiming for £1million turn over this year.
The online shopping mall, which sells more than 1,000 products through a website and catalogues was established in former social club on school street in Hemingfield.
Jason Mace aged 30 Mark Thompson, 34 and Steve Biggs, 33, have just been granted retrospective planning permission for the change of use to business – and now sky is the limit.
But the down to earth partners don’t see themselves as idols of the dotcom generation, or survivors of the meltdown, which hit so many fledging firms.

Unusual
Jason said; “I never thought about it but in the area I suppose it is an unusual business. We’re just taking advantage of the technology without the Internet what we’re doing wouldn’t be possible”
“By the time this year is up we should be really established and all the hard work will have paid off.
The business sells garden furniture, marquees, gazebos, patio heaters, trestle tables and folding chairs and specialise in outdoor leisure. And orders are despatched all over the country, America and Europe is one of their biggest markets.
Jason said the plan was to borrow money from the bank and move to a multipurpose-built warehouse. Then Gala Tent can import direct from over seas suppliers making Gala Tent unbeatable on price, as we would be cutting out the middleman.
Jason said: “its been hard work and a lot of late nights but we want to be so big that we don’t have to worry about competition and cash flow, long may it continue.

NEW SUPER MARQUEE LAUNCHED BY GALA TENT
Gala Marquee Sales has recently launched the latest in its range of top selling marquees. With approximately 20ft x 10ft of ground space and about 10ft height to the centre apex, the new Gala Tent Marquee is made of Rip-Stop water resistant anti-UV protection sheeting. White in colour, it is strong enough to offer protection from the summer elements. The marquee comes as part of a package that comes with a powder coated steel tubular framework, windowed side panels, pedestal feet, guide ropes, steel pegs, instructions and an easy-to-store bag. Gala Tents’s Jason Mace told MTN, “It is an inexpensive marquee and will introduce a haven of shelter for up to 32 people at any garden party this summer. It will provide traders with a niche market as they can sell this marquee for the same price it would normally cost to hire one of an equivalent size.

Ecommerce Revolution

Surf’s up, riding the Internet wave
As one traditional enterprise closes down a silicon-shiny new one has sprung up in its place. David Walsh discovered what happened when the Internet landed in Hemingfield.

The last black ball of the last pool game of the season heralded the end of an era at a Hemingfield Village Club. Minutes after last week’s match the doors at the Hemingfield club on School Street closed. But the building won’t stand unused – it has become part of the mushrooming business empire of three local entrepreneurs who are set to make a fortune from the Internet revolution. Jason Mace, 28, and Mark Thompson, 32 of School Street are partners in galatent.co.uk, an online shopping ‘mall’ offering more than 1,000 products ranging from Marquees to outdoor furniture. And as with third partner Steve Biggs, 31 of Hough Lane, Wombwell, they have just landed a potentially multi-million pound deal to design and construct websites. The entire village club is now their headquarters and they hope to employ six locals on the website development in the near future. But the dizzying success of the business – and the potential to make vast amounts of cash – has not affected them yet. The three are only paying themselves £20.000 a year to start with. Said Jason; we are going to keep our feet on the ground; “we won’t go mad on flash cars. We work all hours because our ultimate goal is to be the best at what we specialise in. Company began last year when lifelong friends and trained joiners, Jason and Mark working away from home. But Jason was unhappy, and quit to sell marquees to Millennium party organisers. Business took off and in November he persuaded Mark to join him, Jason said: “The marquees set us up. But people wanted furniture, heating, flooring, lighting etc to go inside them, and we’ve kept adding products since then.” In April the pair were so busy they had to get a computer expert in to help. Enter old friend Steve Biggs, a software developer at Dearne Valley college when he was asked to build a more professional website for Gala Tent. Steve, whose girlfriend Vicki is expecting a baby in September said “I thought if I could do it for Gala Tent, I could do it for other people. It was a big decision but you can spend the rest of your life wondering if it would have worked – it’s paid off.” Their original base was in a backroom at the club – where Jason’s father Tony was licensee – but with space becoming a problem they persuaded him to close the ailing business and invest in Gala Tent. But although it all happened so fast, it’s been hard work. Said Jason: “ I never sleep much and I always take one night out a week to get drunk because that’s the only way to get the quality shut-eye I need.”

And for the future? Further expansion and as Mark comments: “Early retirement would be nice.”.

Smoking Ban Boosts Firms Productivity.

Gala Tent Marquees Smoking Shelters By Ian Thompson

A firm says its sales have risen by between £50, 000 and £60,000 a month since it changed its rules on smoking at the start of the year. Gala Tent Ltd at Grimehorpe says productivity of its 20 workers has risen 80 percent since smoking was restricted to 30-minute lunch breaks. About a third of the workforce smoke and Managing Director Jason Mace said two members of staff had been persuaded to give up cigarettes.
A couple of other staff had to be disciplined for ‘insubordination’ in the first few days when the smoking rules were introduced. Mr Mace said: “Until the end of last year, anyone who wanted a cigarette in working hours went and had one. “It was getting to a point when some staff were taking two hours a day in smoking breaks which we felt was unfair on those who did not smoke. “We decided to change the rules on smoking in working hours now so it would come a less shock when the law changes in July. “Most of those who smoke felt the changes would help them give up” The Company, which makes marquees, tents, gazebos, flooring, lighting heating equipment, decided to manufacture smoking shelters for its smokers. It was decided to add smoking shelters to its product range and sold in January 2007, 50 shelters, including 26 to car dealer Carcraft. The firm moved to Park Springs Industrial Estate at the end of 2005 after spring 3 years at Station Road Industrial Estate, Wombwell. It was originally set up in Hemingfield.

There’s a Gazebo at the bottom of my garden’ – and nice it looks.

By
George W Bateson
Freelance Journalist
They are used extensively on show grounds and almost every wedding party has one, on every beach there is a multi coloured array of them and no self respecting garden is without one, it seems they are everywhere – and just what are they? Why the Gazebo.
Gazebos are the most liked garden ornament today and the popularity of this canvas, metal-framed open sided structure has seen many a tent and awning manufacturer taking an upswing with the supplying of them.
There are several theories as to the origin of the word Gazebo, some go for the view that it is a corruption of an oriental word meaning a turret or window in the roof of a house, one that afforded a view whilst others go for the English word ‘gaze’ with the Latin ebo (I shall) tagged on the end giving us the word Gazebo first introduced into the English language in the mid 1700s.
Also known to many as Summerhouses, Pergola’s, pavilions or even the Italian ‘Belvedere’ the gazebo has been around for as long as can be recalled. The Egyptians were known to have them in gardens as long ago as 1400 BC and evidence has it they may even have been using a gazebo type structure as early as 2600BC. The Japanese tea house was a simple structure whereas the Chinese went in for a more elaborate and larger gazebo and it is mainly through this Chinese influence that in the 18th century the gazebo spread throughout Europe.
Changing from part of the structure of the building to a private place in the garden where one can rest and enjoy the view the gazebo took on a different life. Designed in many shapes and sizes from small wooden structures with open sides in the gardens of the not so rich whilst much bigger more elaborate and ornate gazebos were a central feature in the extensive formal gardens of the well to do – but the one thing they all had in common was they had a view over the gardens large or small.
The canvas gazebo has moved on in at a furious pace since they were first produced as a simple open sided canvas shelter supported by a metal frame, roll down flaps have been added transforming it into a windproof shelter. Not only do they simply afford protection from the elements but gazebo’s of a most superior nature can be bought, constructed in the finest mahogany and in these a hot tub can be installed in which if you wish you can sit in the luxury of hot water looking out over the garden!!
A leader in the field of supplying gazebos is West Yorkshires Gala Tent based in Grimethorpe, near Barnsley. Created in September 1999 by local entrepreneurs Jason Mace and Mark Thompson and joined by software expert Steve Briggs this Internet shopping complex has gazebos, marquees, patio heaters, folding tables and chairs – even a modular constructed dance floor on their shopping list and are leading contract suppliers to many hire companies, councils and units of the emergency services. From their humble start in the premises of the Hemingfield village club - of which Jason’s father was the licensee and was persuaded to close the failing business and invest in Gala Tent - they have now moved into purpose built warehouse with over 25,000 square feet of floor space plus office accommodation in Springfield Road, Grimethorpe, Barnsley and recorded an annual sales of over £4,000,000. MD Jason Mace guarantees that any order placed with them before three o clock will guarantee delivery the next working day and to ensure the packages arrive in pristine condition they are protected with heavy polythene covering.
Their premises at Unit 1, Park Springs are run with the latest state of the art technology as well as personal service. Not only do they carry the largest stock of items of any similar company in Europe but are fully geared up to producing any type and size of canvas structure you care to ask for.
Head of Sales, Lisa Mace, controls a team of sales persons who answer calls, take and process orders and who is quick to state that wherever Gala Tent send their items to there are no delivery charges.
Whilst Gala Tent is mainly an Internet organisation they do encourage those who prefer to shop in the traditional way to visit their showrooms where a full range of their products is available. On their web site they have a corporate video created by Jason Mace on which can be seen not only the organization and some of the team but the standards of the materials used, the precision of the component parts and the detail that goes into each item before it is dispatched to ensure that the customer receives exactly what they have ordered and receives it in excellent condition.
Following the disastrous earthquake in Pakistan Gala Tent immediately supplied 40 Marquees to the Islamic Relief Organisation to assist with shelters and schooling for the homeless. Commented Jason Mace, MD Gala Tent ‘ We were only to pleased to assist and as the largest stockist of marquees in Europe were able to deliver them to Birmingham the following day to be flown immediately to the affected area’.
And what of the future of the Gazebo? Why they are to go on and on, they even have a mention in Star Wars, on the Planet of Twilight, quote ‘A silver cup, probably some kind of cooking bowl under the Gazebo’s black shade, floated into view’ unquote. So there we have it Gazebo’s past, present and well into the future.

Barnsley Hospice Midnight Walk

Gala Shade Gazebo used by Barnsley Hospice for their Midnight Walk I am writing on behalf of patients and staff at Barnsley Hospice to say a really big thank you for so kindly loaning us a gazebo for our recent Midnight Walk.

This was the first time we had staged this event and it was incredibly successful. With over 450 pajama clad ladies taking part, the atmosphere was electric! When hundreds of balloons were released on the stroke of midnight it was an emotional moment - there was a distinct mixture of smiles and tears and very definite feeling of camaraderie as everyone set off. Most of the ladies who set out on their journey finished the course and for some, the sense of achievement as they crossed the finish line was overwhelming.

Although not all the sponsor money has been received, I am delighted to let you know that initial calculations show that in excess of £20,000 will have been generated for the Hospice, a truly amazing amount I'm sure you'll agree.

Bransley Hospice provides Specialist Palliative Care to local community completely free of charge. It is now thirteen years since we first opened our doors as a Day Hospice to care for patients with life threatening illness, and during this time our work has touched the lives of thousands of people. We are immensely grateful to our patrons past and present and acknowledge the unstinting generosity of people of the people in Barnsley.

Thank you once again for your support, we really do appreciate it.

Best Wishes

The Christian and Muslim community joined forces for the first time this Christmas to help the poor and needy. Members of the Huddersfield Methodist Mission and Amadiyyah Muslim community united at the Welcome Centre on Christmas Day to provide food, clothing and tea and coffee to homeless people in Huddersfield. Around 30 people turned up throughout the day, as representatives from both communities were on hand to make soup and pasta, and hot tea and coffee from 1pm to 5.30pm. The visitors also left with hats and gloves, blankets and food parcels to keep them going for the coming days and weeks.
Steven Ward of the Methodist Mission, said: “It was a wonderful day and it was so special that the Muslim and Christian communities could come together and do such a great thing for others in Huddersfield who are less fortunate.
“It’s the first time ever we have joined forces and next year will be even bigger.”
Amadiyyah members contacted the Methodist Mission after reading an article in the Examiner.
Since then, the communities have held several meetings and have decided to work together in the future to help people in Huddersfield.
Mr Ward said: “It’s a very special moment in the Huddersfield Community and we look forward to meeting again and working together.”
